How marine financing works

01

Estimate & preliminary study

Calculate terms and send your profile. A partner marine financing specialist contacts you within 24 hours to analyze your situation and explain whether a loan or leasing is favorable.

02

Lender dossier & review

The documentation is presented to accredited marine credit bodies. Pre-review terms and exact interest matrices are presented for you to compare.

03

Survey & maritime settlement

Upon successful marine survey and notary/flag mortgage inscription, the lender releases the funds directly to the registered seller or shipyard for vessel delivery.

Leasing in Spain

Nautical leasing (leasing náutico) lets a person or a company use a boat while the lessor keeps legal title during the contract. It is often used for boats in charter or company use. Tax treatment depends on your situation, so confirm it with an adviser.

Leasing in Italy

In Italy a boat lease (locazione finanziaria nautica) is common for pleasure and commercial craft. VAT and registration rules apply, and lenders normally ask for a survey report. Confirm the details with an adviser.

Documents lenders usually ask for

  • Independent surveyor report on hull and engines
  • Two years of company accounts, or personal tax returns
  • Builder's certificate (new boat) or registry extract (used boat)
  • Insurance quote or binder for the boat

Nautelo does not lend money and does not hold funds. Rates, terms and the final decision are the lender's.

Got questions?

Frequently asked questions

Can non-resident citizens obtain boat financing in Spain or Italy?

Yes. Many Mediterranean marine banks provide loans and leasing to EU and non-EU citizens, provided the vessel stays in designated territorial waters and the applicant provides certified tax documents in their country of residence.

Is a pre-purchase marine survey mandatory for lenders?

For pre-owned vessels, accredited marine credit institutions almost always require an independent hull and machinery survey to confirm market valuation and seaworthiness before disbursing funds.

How does the Spanish matriculation tax (IEDMT) affect financing?

In Spain, vessels over 8 metres in length used by tax residents are subject to the 12% IEDMT tax. Some lenders allow this tax to be included in the financed principal, while others require it to be settled separately upon vessel flagging.
